Abstract
The present paper aims to examine, from a comparative perspective, Herodotus’ ac¬count of the healing of Atossa by Democedes of Croton (Hdt. 3,133–134,1) alongside an anonymous exemplum found in book 3 of Seneca’s de ira (dial. 5,39,4), starting from the hypothesis that the latter constitutes a direct or mediated reworking of the same historical episode. The analysis focuses in particular on the narrative and fun¬ctional transformation the anecdote undergoes in Seneca’s version, where the addition of elements not attested in the Herodotean source—chief among them the detail of the scalpel hidden inside a sponge—results in a profound shift in its purpose: from a chro¬nicle of a medical success, significant also for the protagonist’s social advancement, to a philosophical-moral exemplum illustrating, from a Stoic perspective, the prudentia required in the management of the passions. By analysing this reworking, the paper seeks to highlight not only the differing intentions of Herodotus and Seneca, but also the ways in which material of historical origin can be transfigured and repurposed for rhetorical and didactic aims within the context of Roman philosophical treatises.
Il presente contributo si propone di esaminare in chiave comparativa il reso¬conto erodoteo della guarigione di Atossa ad opera di Democede di Crotone (Hdt. 3,133-134,1) e un exemplum anonimo tratto dal terzo libro del de ira di Seneca (dial. 5,39,4), muovendo dall’ipotesi che quest’ultimo costituisca una ri¬elaborazione – diretta o mediata – del medesimo episodio storico. L’indagine si concentra, in particolare, sulla trasformazione narrativa e funzionale che l’a¬neddoto subisce nella versione senecana, laddove l’aggiunta di elementi non attestati nella fonte erodotea, e tra essi soprattutto il dettaglio dello scalpello nascosto in una spugna, determina un mutamento profondo della sua finali¬tà: da cronaca di un successo medico, rilevante anche per l’ascesa sociale del protagonista, a exemplum filosofico-morale volto a illustrare, in chiave stoica, la prudentia nella gestione delle passioni. Attraverso l’analisi di tale rielaborazio¬ne, il contributo intende mettere in luce non solo le divergenti intenzionalità di Erodoto e Seneca, ma anche le modalità attraverso cui un materiale di origine storica possa essere trasfigurato e funzionalizzato a scopi retorici e didattici nel contesto della trattatistica filosofica romana.
