Abstract
Among Gabriele Faerno’s Latin poems, we have a composition of just 42 verses dedicated to the physician Omobono Offredi, his fellow countryman. In this short poem, written in elegiac couplets, Faerno narrates how Offredi performed a sur¬gical operation on himself, removing a stone from his bladder. The anecdote offers the poet the opportunity to poetically recount how this pathology was treated in sixteenth-century Italy. In this contribution we aim to analyse the way Faerno uses medical material to construct a celebratory poem, transforming the medical treat¬ment of this disease into poetic material. Thus, we hold this poem as an interesting example of how to ‘narrate medicine’, that is, how to use narrative strategies in the description of diseases and their treatment.
