Abstract
This article explores the possibility that Menander’s Epitrepontes may have circulated in antiquity also with the singular form of the title, that is, Epitrepon. The main pieces of evidence are the readings Ἐπιτρέποντοϲ in Stob. IV 29d,58 and Epitrepontem in Sidon. epist. IV 12,1-2. The singular form of the title would reflect the importance of Syriscus at crucial stages of the plot. Taking account of the readings Ἐπιτρέποντοϲ and Epitrepontem, one could also consider the integration Ἐπι[τρέπων in P.Oxy. LX 4020,1 as an indication of the play’s alternative title.
