Abstract
Using the technique of progressive map comparison, the aim of this research is to reconstruct the landscape and land use transformations that have occurred in the upper Vara valley (Liguria, Italy). With the aim of updating the studies on the valley and quantifying the changes that have occurred, the analysis was based on a comparison between the 1936 Italian Kingdom Forest Map, the 1988 Vegetation Map of the Upper Vara Valley and the 2000 and 2019 Land Use Maps of the Liguria Region. The main results show a marked increase in the wooded area between 1936 and 2019 of 46.39% (with an incidence on the whole area rising from 52% to 77%) and the speed of the phenomenon between 1988 and 2000 (+22.60%). A parallel decrease in agricultural areas (-51% between 1988 and 2019 and -37.34% between 1988 and 2000) and the abandonment of silvicultural practices demonstrate a progressive and widespread rewilding in the upper valley.
