Abstract

The essay draws from Ivan Verč’s analysis of the adverb “vdrug” (вдруг) in Dostoevsky (2016) in order to ask how the complexity of this adverb is perceived in Spanish Dostoevsky, especially through Rafael Cansinos Assens’ translations. The article addresses the role of Rafael Cansinos Assens as a translator in a “permanent state of literature”. It also analyses the genesis of his translation of Crime and Punishment and the context in which it was made. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the adverb “vdrug” in four Spanish versions of the novel is presented. The aim is to show how the different translations of this element reveal the diversity of stylistic gestures and the readings they generate.
