Abstract
a diffondersi in tutto l’areale agrumicolo italiano, in particolare in Sicilia e Calabria.
altre aree agricole, bosco, improduttivo, urbanizzato).
The tristeza virus (CTV Citrus Tristeza Virus) has already caused enormous damage
and continues to spread throughout the Italian citrus growing area, especially in Sicily
and Calabria.
To stem this epidemic and limit its consequences is important to have valid survey
instruments, even from the geographical and economic point of view. Among these,
we can include the preparation of sufficiently detailed maps of citrus growing micro
areas, highlighting the abandoned land and those converted with the same or other
crops.
From the geographical point of view, the method to be adopted will be based on building
a computerized database consisting in a collection of basic data for describing the
topographical, economic and environmental components of the concerned territory
and in the elaboration of specific thematic maps highlighting the major changes both
on a purely agrarian scale and on a total land scale, including also the possible interrelations
with the anthropogenic and natural environment.
The use of GIS software and the availability of suitable base maps (map of the regional
land use, aerial orthophotos, Regional Technical Papers, direct field measurements,
etc.) will allow creating a uniform raster and vector data base related to the soil coverage
(classified according to five main categories: citrus growing areas, other agricultural
areas, forest, unproductive, urbanized). The information gathered through
surveys of the Authorities and integrated with direct field surveys will be entered into
a database that will later be combined with base maps for the appropriate thematic
reconstruction issues.
The study and implementation of a geographic information system of citrus growing
areas will be supported by a local knowledge analysis that will examine some structural
aspects of farms affected by structural changes induced by the presence of the
virus, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of changes in progress and
the possible evolution of the citrus growing area. The results of local surveys will be
computerized in order to properly correlate the different agro-environmental typologies.
The GIS, obtained by superposition of the two survey levels in a digital format
compatible with the most representative GIS softwares, will be transferred on data
storage devices to be used by any research facility, capable of any developments and
insights, conscious of the fact that a study of this kind is always evolving.
