Abstract
Quando si parla di geografia le reazioni che si suscitano nell’interlocutore sono quasi sempre di
indifferenza, se non di disgusto, considerata l’immagine che di essa si è conservata dalla scuola.
Una percezione negativa legata al nozionismo e alla memorizzazione fine a se stessa che l’ha fatta
odiare ad intere generazioni di studenti, e che oggi la portano ad essere sempre più marginalizzata
e marginale nel contesto formativo. E con essa la cartografia che ne è il linguaggio specifico,
nonostante il suo crescente utilizzo come strumento di comunicazione e conoscenza. Un convegno
volto alla disamina dei problemi connessi alla didattica della cartografia diventa il tentativo di
recuperare un’immagine diversa della disciplina proprio grazie all’utilizzo delle immagini cartografiche.
La loro riscoperta, al pari della geografia, può favorire la formazione dei cittadini del mondo,
cioè di persone in grado di sapersi rapportare con un’informazione sempre più ricca, varia e caratterizzata
da linguaggi diversi. Solo chi saprà decodificare il modo attento, preciso, compiuto queste
forme di comunicazione potrà essere soggetto e non oggetto di quel potere che la massmedialità
offre, per essere pronto a cogliere le opportunità, a comprendere i cambiamenti e a confrontarsi
con il mondo della complessità.
When somebody speaks about geography the reactions that can be noticed in the interlocutor are
very often of indifference, if not revulsion at it, mainly because of the memories from school. A
negative perception linked to the sciolism and memorization for memorization’s sake, that made
geography hated by generation of students made geography more and more marginalized and
marginal in the formative context. And with geography the same happened to cartography, that
is its specific language, despite its increasing usage as communication and knowledge tool. A meeting
about the didactics of cartography becomes an attempt to recover a different image of the
subject, thanks to the utilization of cartographic images. Their rediscovery, together with the geography,
can help in the education of citizen of the world, i.e. people able to manage a richer and
richer information, characterized by different languages. Only who will be able to decode this communication
means in a careful, precise and complete manner, will be a subject and not a object of
the power offered by mass-media, and will be able to catch the opportunities, to understand the
changes and to manage the ever-changing world of complexity.
