Abstract
The article suggests a consideration on the utility and effectiveness of augmented reality's applications in tourism field. After having introduced the variety of contexts where this technology is used and the economic market value linked to the expected diffusion of augmented reality, it takes into consideration the support that it is able to offer to the tourism and territorial promotion, thrAGAT Cartographic Cooperative is developing a series of cartographic activities focused on the research project on Rome’s public drinking fountains whose shape recalls the one of a big nose and which distribute potable water across the Italian capital. The methodology applied a GPS based survey to locate the nasoni across the territory; next, we have created a database with all the complementary and qualitative information and, finally, it was possible to map the fountains across the entire municipality. The objective of such research is the creation of shared-maps through three different platforms (ArcGIS Online, QGISCloud, OpenStreetMap) in order to have a compared analysis of both pros and cons of each instrument regarding the mapping itself and the peculiarity of sharing the data and related information.ough a range of Italian case-studies. The conclusive part highlights strenghts and weaknesses of augmented reality and remarks on the new digital divides which come from unequal productions of places' augmented contents.
