Le pitture murali di Casa Bertoli ad Aquileia dei secoli XV-XVIII

Abstract

The paper describes the internal decoration of the "Casa Bertoli", inhabited by canons of the chapter of the Patriarchal Aquileian Basilica, dating between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, until now neglected by scholars attentive in the past on existing fourteenth-century frescoes in the hall on the first floor and in the room entirely covered by fake textiles of orientai inspiration. In 1489 the canon Doimo of Valvasone, an eminent figure of prelate in contact with the papal court and the great Roman culture of the fifteenth century, had made decorations, opening in the façade the window with his epigraph. Inside he erected a stone fireplace, beautifully carved, in a room on the first floor, and he hàd to paint a fresco, very abraded, depicting a Pietà according to an iconography that refers to the contemporary Venetian painting (John Bellini), flanked by two shields with the arms of the family Valvasone (the wolf and the lion). The canons who lived in the building between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries have left other traces: between the depicted arms one is due to the noble Francis di Prampero ( dating back to the end of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century); other not identifiable are housed in the rooms on the first floor. Interesting is the presence of some pieces of preserved fresco on the wall of the landing of the stairs leading to the first floor. The figuration, perhaps with moral significance of Susanna with the old men, had a grotesque subject and reveal a popular taste: it can be assigned to locai painter of the seventeenth century, characterized by a pungent vernacular accent.

Lo scritto illustra le testimonianze artistiche conservate nella "Casa Bertoli", sede dei canonici del Capitolo della Basilica Patriarcale di Aquileia, risalenti all'età moderna, ossia tra il XV e il XVIII secolo, sino ad oggi trascurate dagli studiosi, concentratisi in passato sugli affreschi trecenteschi esistenti nel salone al primo piano e nella sala con le pareti interamente decorate da finti tessuti di ispirazione orientale. Nel 1489 il canonico Doimo di Valvasone, eminente figura di prelato in contatto con gli ambienti pontifici e con la grande cultura romana del pieno Quattrocento, fece eseguire lavori di abbellimento sia all'esterno con l'apertura della finestra e la posa dell'epigrafe sulla facciata, sia all'interno con l'erezione del camino in pietra in una stanza al primo piano, finemente scolpito, e l'esecuzione di un affresco assai abraso raffigurante verosimilmente la Pietà impostata secondo un'iconografia che rimanda alla coeva pittura veneziana (Giovanni Bellini), affiancata da due scudi con gli stemmi della famiglia Valvasone (il lupo e il leone). Tracce lasciate dai canonici che abitarono nell'edificio tra il Cinque e il Settecento sono rappresentate da stemmi, come quello riconducibile al nobile Francesco di Prampero (databile tra la fine del Cinque e l'inizio del Seicento) ed altri non identificabili nelle stanze al primo piano. Interessante la presenza di alcuni brani di affresco èonservatisi sulla parete del pianerottolo della scala che porta al primo piano, di soggetto grottesco e di gusto popolare con la figurazione, in chiave forse morale, di Susanna con i vecchioni, brani assegnabili a pittore locale del XVII secolo, connotati da un sapido accento vernacolare.
