Abstract
Roma fin dalle sue origini si aprì su un portus, che rimase anche in seguito, pur opportunamente modificato per migliorarne la capienza, l'unico sbarco urbano ad essere definito tale. Ma ben presto tutte le ripae, cioè le sponde murate a destra ed a sinistra dell'alveo, si attrezzarono con stationes, ovvero punti di ormeggio per la ricezione, l'accumulo e lo smistamento di carichi mercantili che giungevano da luoghi anche molto lontani; si crearono, inoltre, piccoli bacini, piazzole di scarico momentaneo e marciapiedi di attesa: un insieme d'infrastrutture sulle quali prese vita una meticolosa organizzazione commerciale in grado di garantire pieno benessere alla città. Rome from its origins was open on a portus, which was later, conveniently modified to improve the capacity, being the only urban harbor. But soon on all the ripae, i.e. the banks to the right and left sides of the riverbed, were equipped with stationes, or mooring points for the reception, storage and sorting of merchandises that carne from very far away countries. In addition, small ponds, temporary moorings and quaysides were built. A series of facilities developed a meticulous commerciai organization able to provide wellness to the city. This research investigates on the meaning of portus indicating where the stationes were and what were the merchandises. These results are deducible from inscriptions that surely come from the riverbanks.
