Abstract
Some notes are dedicated to representations of fish vivaria in the Roman artistic repertoire. This subject has its origins in the tradition of Hellenistic naturalism and is frequent in the pictorial and mosaic production of the Roman world. It is characterized for the manner in which "marine life"
is depicted, always alive, on a blue bottom that imitates water. The success of these representations is well explained considering the appreciation of fìsh products in Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous mentions in Latin sources and sumptuary laws enacted to limit their use.
