O Danaum fortissime gentis: una problematica citazione di Giovenale (15, 66) in Servio (Aen. I 96)

Abstract

Commentando <em>Aen</em>. I 96, Servio si interroga sul motivo per cui Virgilio ha definito Diomede <em>Danaum fortissime gentis</em>: l’ultima delle tre spiegazioni è rafforzata dalla testimonianza di Iuv. 15, 66, implicita nel caso del Servio vulgato, esplicita nel <em>Servius auctus</em> (DS). La citazione di Giovenale ricompare ancora in DS <em>ad Aen</em>. IV 228. La particolarità dell’inserimento in DS di un autore come Giovenale, utilizzato 94 volte da Servio e solo 3 volte da DS (di cui due dello stesso passo, ossia proprio Iuv. 15, 66), consente di rimettere in discussione la presenza e l’<em>auctoritas</em> di Giovenale nella grammatica e nella scoliastica pre-serviani.

<em>While commenting on the lemma fortissime gentis, at Aen. I 96, Servius alludes to Juvenal 15.66. At the end of the scholion, however,</em> Servius auctus<em> (DS) provides a fuller text. The reading percussum must be preserved here against superatum of the Harvard edition, in order to explain why DS inserted Juv. 15, 66. The same Juvenal’s quote is reported extensively by DS again at </em>Aen<em>. IV 228, in a similar context. This paper aims to investigate the presence of Juvenal in the Virgilian scholia, since Juvenal is quoted 94 times by Servius and only 3 times by DS. The result leads to further considerations on the </em>auctoritas<em>s of Juvenal in grammarians and commentators before Servius, particularly Donatus.</em>
