Urban scenarios created from climate change suggest adverse situations for human habitability and highlight the role of urban open spaces and their potential in enhancing the short-term resilience. Applied through urban guidelines, the blue-green infrastructure increases urban resilience while reconfiguring the cultural landscape of our cities. The author's interest is to explore and discuss the impacts of this strategy on the urban landscape of Porto Alegre, relying on urban projects and regulations.

The authors analyze the recent morphological changes in the landscape of Independência Avenue in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil). An avenue that hosts buildings of cultural and protected value even in front of the transformations that have taken place over time. The analysis of the landscape context highlights some examples of the transformations that have affected urban landscapes and assumes relevance in the current revision of the Urban and Environmental Development Plan.

The authors discuss the constant expansion of urbanization and its repercussions on the ecological support associated with the model of urban land use in contemporary cities. Urban expansion occurs through the appropriation of rural/natural areas, which affects ecological systems and leads to a multi-level change in the climate. They describe the alterations that have taken place in the rural area of the municipality of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, in order to understand its process of transformation.

Among the Brazilian State capital cities, Porto Alegre is considered a pioneer in the development of public policies aimed at urban forestation. The coexistence between urban trees and cultural assets, however, is not always peaceful. The authors approache this scenario of conflicts from the perspective of the historical evolution of urban forestation in the city between the 70s and the present day. They also discuss the application of the concepts of green infrastructure and cultural landscape to build new public policies aimed at planning and managing urban forestation.
