Gesuiti e guaranì nelle Reducciones del Paraguay in età coloniale

Abstract

The author summarizes the history of the Reductions, the famous missions initiated by the Jesuits among the Indian population of Guaranì in Paraguay between the 16th and 17th centuries. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Spanish Empire, the Reductions rapidly declined until the total destruction of many of them. Today their ruins, carefully restored and visited one by one by the author, constitute one of the major tourist attractions of the Southern Cone and one of the most popular topics in Latin American historiography.

El autor resume la historia de las Reducciones, las famosas misiones iniciadas por los jesuitas entre la población indígena guaraní en Paraguay entre los siglos XVI y XVII. Tras la expulsión de los jesuitas del Imperio español, las Reducciones declinaron rápidamente hasta la destrucción total de muchas de ellas. Hoy sus ruinas, cuidadosamente restauradas, han sido visitadas una por una por el autor, constituyen uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos del Cono Sur y uno de los temas más populares de la historiografía latinoamericana.

L’autore riassume la storia delle Riduzioni, le celebri missioni avviate dai gesuiti tra la popolazione indiana dei guaranì nel Paraguay tra il XVI e il XVII secolo. Dopo l’espulsione dei gesuiti dall’Impero spagnolo le Riduzioni decaddero rapidamente fino alla totale distruzione di molte di esse. Oggi le loro rovine, accuratamente restaurate e visitate ad una ad una dall’autore, costituiscono una delle maggiori attrattive turistiche del Cono Sud e uno degli argomenti più frequentati dalla storiografia latino-americana.
