Aesthetics of Television: Intermediality in Contemporary Art of Post-Soviet Kazakhstan

Abstract
The following article deals with significant intermedial experiments of representatives of Kazakhstani contemporary art in the final decade of the 20th century including experiences using television aesthetics. The cultural peculiarity of these samples of contemporary art has been identified in the process of documentation of ongoing events and the transmission of reality’s trauma. The work proves that exactly this kind of art has become a mediator, which reflects the quasi- real world of Kazakhstani social and cultural space. A special position in the article is taken by the analysis of the influence of televisual aesthetics on the video projects of Ziachan Shaigeldinov (Shai-Zia), texts and performances by Sergei Maslov, and Erbol Meldibekov’s projects. The work also demonstrates the transformation of these art projects into a social-political “text”, which anticipates a lot of social-political realia of the post-Soviet country. Furthermore, the article traces aesthetics of documentary and television intermediality in the art of Kazakhstan of the 2010s.
В статье рассмотрены значимые интермедиальные эксперименты представителей казахстанского современного искусства 1990-х гг., в том числе их опыты использо- вания телевизионной эстетики. Определена культурная специфика образцов актуального искусства в процессах документации происхо- дящего и передаче травматичности реальности. В работе доказывается, что именно это искусство стало тем медиапосредником, который отразил квази-реальный мир казах- станского общественного и куль- турного пространства. Особое место в статье занимает анализ влияния телевизионной эстетики на виде- опроекты Зияхана Шайгельдинова (Шай-Зия), тексты и перформансы Сергея Маслова, проекты Ербола Мельдибекова. Показана трансфор- мация этих арт-проектов в значи- мый общественно-политический «текст», предвосхитивший многие социально-политические реалии постсоветской действительности. Далее прослеживается эстетика документальной и телевизионной интермедиальности в искусстве Казахстана 2010-х годов.
