Abstract
Mario De Caro’s latest book, Reality, is a reflection on the concept of Realism and its evolutions, from modernity until today. To an anti-realist attitude, De Caro opposes a realism able to interpret and combine both the demands of “ordinary realism” and “scientific realism”. This union finds expression in the form of “liberalized naturalism”, a realism that combines a pluralistic view with a deterministic approach, yet without giving into reductionisms. The review intends to discuss this outlook and problematize it in the light of contingentist and anti-dualist positions, as well as anti-foundationalist, such as that taken by Richard Rorty.
L’ultimo libro di Mario De Caro, Realtà, è una riflessione sul concetto di Realismo e le sue evoluzioni, dalla modernità ad oggi. Ad un atteggiamento anti-realista, De Caro oppone un realismo capace di interpretare e coniugare assieme sia le istanze del “realismo ordinario” che del “realismo scientifico”. Tale connubio trova espressione nella peculiare forma del “naturalismo liberalizzato”, un realismo che sposa un’ottica pluralista, assieme ad un approccio determinista, senza tuttavia cedere a riduzionismi di sorta. Questo saggio intende discutere tale prospettiva e problematizzarla alla luce di posizioni contingentiste e anti-dualiste, nonché anti-fondazionaliste, come quella assunta da Richard Rorty.
