Abstract
The paper offers a first systematic analysis of the presence and re-use of Martial in Latin grammarians and commentators of Late Antiquity. The investigation of the texts highlights that the epigrammist’s quotations are a ‘new’ material, numerically meagre, less valuable and refined than the most illustrious long-standing auctores, which nevertheless contributes to the expansion and modernisation of a centuries-old “theoretical building”.
Il contributo offre una prima analisi sistematica della presenza e del riuso di Marziale nei grammatici latini e nei commentatori della tarda antichita. Dall’indagine emerge che le citazioni dell’epigrammista si configurano come un materiale ‘nuovo’, numericamente esiguo, meno pregiato e raffinato dei piu illustri auctores di lungo corso, che contribuisce, tuttavia, all’ampliamento e all’ammodernamento di un secolare edificio teorico.
