Abstract
During the Cold War, «l’Unità» portrayed Eastern European gymnasts like Čáslavská, Korbut, and Comăneci as symbols of socialist success, blending sport, politics, and cultural diplomacy. Their grace, discipline, and youth captivated global audiences, while the newspaper emphasized their achievements as proof of socialist systems’ efficacy, often downplaying political tensions. The portrayal of the various Eastern gymnasts presented to Italian readers – careful to highlight both their human qualities and their physical appearance – while sharing some common traits, differed depending on the international geopolitical context as well as the relationships between Italian communists and their counterparts in the Eastern Bloc countries.
