Abstract
This article focuses on the promotion of pedagogical and cultural initiatives carried out in Constantinople/Istanbul between the mid-nineteenth century and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire by a plurality of subjects attributable to the “Italianness”: diplomats, executives and State officials, members patriotic associations and scientific promotion societies, notables of the Italian-speaking community, economic-commercial entities, etc. After delineating the multifaceted boundaries of the colony, I examine the action carried out by the governments of the Kingdom of Italy, the “Mutuo Soccorso” Worker Society in Constantinople and the “Dante Alighieri” Society, and the contextual development of Italian schools – including the current Italian Middle Institutes (IMI) – from their genesis to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
