Abstract
From Trieste, the Lloyd Austriaco Shipping Company began operating regular services to and from the Black Sea a few years after its establishment, during the first half of the XIX Century. Gradually, its routes expanded to create a network of connections covering all the major ports on the southern and northern shores. Over time, Lloyd played an important role in the modernization of that space, thanks in part to its hybrid role (institutional, economic, and logistical). In some cases, political aims prevailed over economic ones, as demonstrated by company data, which clearly shows the company’s desire to continue managing specific services, even though they were causing financial losses. The Trieste shipping company had a leading role in the first development of a modern maritime mobility inside that area, contributing primarily from the point of view of its mechanization, but subordinating its actions to the political interests of the multinational Habsburg state primarily, sometimes also intervening to the advantage of the Ottoman Empire. The subsidies obtained in exchange for these extra-commercial services helped to maintain the company’s profitability, while at the same time protecting its activities even in the face of much stronger and more aggressive competitors.
