From Bergamo to the Bosphorus: The Transnational Journey of the Seminati Family and the Making of Hıdiv Kasrı

Abstract
This article reconstructs the migration of the stonemason Giuseppe Seminati from a village in Bergamo to Dubrovnik, Bucharest, and Istanbul in the mid-19th century, amid major political changes. Using multinational archival sources, it traces the Seminati-Trojanovich family’s integration into Ottoman society through stonemasonry and construction activities. Moreover, it highlights Giuseppe’s son Delfo Seminati’s rise as a leading Istanbul contractor and, through new documentary evidence, identifies for the first time the architect of the famous Bosphorus palace known as Hıdiv Kasrı.
