Abstract
This essay offers an analysis of the public statuary dedicated to Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, a figure celebrated by state institutions during the liberal period. It focuses in particular on two case studies that illuminate the level of engagement generated by the commemoration of the statesman: the monument in Turin (1873) and the monument in Rome (1895). Amid both acclaim and controversy, this statuary had a considerable impact on debates at the local level; however, over time, a certain indifference set in, effectively relegating these monuments largely to the role of “urban ornaments”.
