Abstract
Who provoked in February 1933 – at the wake of the political elections – the fire in the building of the Reichstag in Berlin, provoking heavy damages and accelerating the construction of the Hitlerian dictatorship? The “lone wolf” van der Lubbe? Or was it a conjuration by the communists, or by the Nazis? The question has been central in the political and historiographical debate on the rise of Nazism to power. The essay recapitulates and revises critically the main phases of the controversy, which involves still fundamental questions of method and of professional ethics.
