Abstract
This article analyses, through two Charles Powell’s documents, the Thatcher government’s stance on the process of German reunification. The first, dated 5 March 1990, highlights the disagreement between the White House and Downing Street, the latter ready to establish a cordial entente with the Ussr for countering Germany. The second, dated 25 March 1990, is the summary memorandum of the Chequers seminar, at which Thatcher heard the views of historians and experts on Germany regarding the German “national character” and the prospects of a new German economic dominance in Central Europe.
