Rendiconti dell'Istituto di Matematica dell'Università di Trieste: an International Journal of Mathematics vol.30 (1999) s.

Details

Editorial policy The journal Rendiconti dell’Istituto di Matematica dell’università di Trieste publishes original articles in all areas of mathematics. Special regard is given to research papers, but attractive expository papers may also be considered for publication. The journal usually appears in one issue per year. Additional issues may however be published. In particular, the Managing Editors may consider the publication of supplementary volumes related to some special events, like conferences, workshops, and advanced schools. All submitted papers will be refereed. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the work has not been published before and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Our journal can be obtained by exchange agreements with other similar journals.

Instructions for Authors Authors are invited to submit their papers by e-mail directly to one of the Managing Editors in PDF format. All the correspondence regarding the submission and the editorial process of the paper are done by e-mail. Papers have to be written in one of the following languages: English, French, German, or Italian. Abstracts should not exceed ten printed lines, except for papers written in French, German, or Italian, for which an extended English summary is required. After acceptance, manuscripts have to be prepared in LaTeX using the style rendiconti.cls which can be downloaded from the web page. Any figure should be recorded in a single PDF, PS (PostScript), or EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file.

    $\mu-embedded$ sets in topological spaces

We define the concept of a $\mu-embedded$ set in a completely regular topological space X and we state that every v-embedded set in X is $\mu-embedded$ in X. Also, we give an example which proves that the converse is not true.

We prove that for a regular Hausdorff space X the following conditions are equivalent: (1) X is locally compact, (2) for each quasi-k-space Y, the product space $X \times Y$ is also a quasi-k-space.

    Cofinal bicompletenessand quasi-metrizability

We introduce the notions of a cofinally bicomplete quasi-uniformity and of a cofinally bicomplete quasi-pseudometric. The Sorgenfrey quasi-metric and the Kofner quasi-metric are interesting examples of cofinally bicomplete quasi-metrics. We observe that the finest quasi-uniformity of any quasi-pseudometrizable bitopological space is cofinally bicomplete and characterize those quasi-pseudometrizable bitopological spaces which admit a cofinally bicomplete quasi-pseudometric. A necessary and sufficient condition for cofinal bicompleteness of quasi-pseudometrizable to-pological spaces is derived. Finally, quasi-metrizable bitopological spaces whose supremum topology is locally compact are characterized.

    A non quasi-metric completion for quasi-metric spaces

The authors have previously presented a completion theory for those approach spaces which have an underlying To topology – these include all quasi-metric spaces. This theory extends the existing completion theory for uniform approach spaces, which in turn generalizes that for metric spaces. This new completion theory, moreover, has an interesting relationship with the completion theory for nearness spaces. The theory allows every quasi-metric space to be completed, and remarkably such completions need not again be quasimetric; this situation contrasts with all other previously introduced completion theories for quasi-metric spaces (e.g. [12, 3, 9]). In this paper we present an example of a non-quasi-metric completion, and we give some conditions which ensure that the completion is again quasi-metric. This investigation leads us to favour one particular form of Cauchy sequence in quasi-metric spaces.

Quasi-metric spaces, quasi-metric hyperspaces and uniform local compactness

We show that every locally compact quasi-metrizable Moore space admits a uniformly locally compact quasi-metric. We also observe that every equinormal quasi-metric is cofinally complete. Finally we prove that for any small-set symmetric quasi-uniform space, uniform local compactness is preserved by the Hausdorff-Bourbaki quasi-uniformity on compact sets. Several illustrative examples are given.
