Etica & Politica / Ethics & Politics is an open access philosophical journal, being published only in an electronic format. The journal aims at promoting research and reflection, both historically and theoretically, in the field of moral and political philosophy, with no cultural preclusion or adhesion to any cultural current.

Contributions should be submitted in one of these languages: Italian, English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish. All essays should include an English abstract of max. 200 words. The editorial staff especially welcomes interdisciplinary contributions with special attention to the main trends in the world of practice. The journal has an anonymous double peer review referee system. Three issues per year are expected.

Etica & Politica / Ethics & Politics position on publishing ethics. The Editors of E&P have taken every possible measure to ensure the quality of the material here published and, in particular, they guarantee that peer review at their journal is fair, unbiased and timely, and that all papers have been reviewed by unprejudiced and qualified reviewers. The publication of an article through a peer review process is intended as an essential feature of any serious scientific community. The decision to accept or reject a paper for publication is based on the paper’s relevance, originality and clarity, the study’s validity and its relevance to the mission of the journal. In order to guarantee the quality of the published papers, the Editors encourage reviewers to provide detailed comments to motivate their decisions. The comments will help the Editorial Board to decide the outcome of the paper, and will help to justify this decision to the author. If the paper is accepted with the request of revision, the comments should guide the author in making the revisions for the final manuscript. All material submitted to the journal remains confidential while under review. Once the author receives a positive answer, he/she should send the final version of the article since proofs will not be sent to him/her. E&P will publish the paper within twelve months from the moment of the acceptance, and the author will be informed of the publication. The journal is committed to such standards as originality in research papers, precise references in discussing other scholars’ positions, avoiding plagiarism. E&P takes these standards extremely seriously, because we think that they embody scientific method and are the mark of real scholarly communication.

Since Etica & Politica / Ethics & Politics is devoted solely to scientific and academic quality, the journal does not have any submission charges.

Some Remarks on Moral Rules

In this article I discuss some aspects of prima facie statements and compare them with some deductive properties of moral rules. The conclusion I draw is in the sense of a re-evaluation of some aspects of moral intuitionism, which seems essential to the concepts of moral imagination and moral education.

The issue of human rights continues to be a battleground between divergent beliefs. Currently, it does not seem to be a unifying idea, but a cause of division that may strengthen the “clash of civilizations” or the “war of cultures”. This article stresses that the universality of human rights could only be sustained by stating the organic relation of human rights with some general facts that characterize human nature and explain why moral indignation is so common and negative reactions so widely spread when gross violations of human rights occur. This relationship can be shown by incorporating into the doctrine of human rights a general notion of “capabilities” and functioning of every “human being” and every “form of human life” as that one expressed in the texts by Sen and in Nussbaum particularly.

Giner on the Socio-genesis of Morality

I discuss the main claims in a new book on the origins of morality (Salvador Giner, El origen de la moral. Ética y valores en la sociedad actual, Ediciones Península, Barcelona 2012, 419 pp.). These are: i) our time, far from being the twilight of morality, is the first time in human history when a universalistic and autonomous morality has emerges as a social phenomenon, not just as a philosophical theory; ii) even if thousand years of rational philosophical discussion of morality has yielded valuable insights, yet a fresh start of critical reflexion on morality qua phenomenon is first possible now, starting with a sociological understanding of morality as spontaneous emergence of codes of norms; iii) sociology is intrinsically ethical theory, since at a certain point, no empirical and technocratic proc-essing of social data still makes sense and sociological discourse has to become reflexive, interpretive, and most of all, construed in terms of explicit valuations.

The Moral and Cognitive Value of Art

This paper is about the notions of the artistic, aesthetic, cognitive and moral value of art and their (possible) interconnectedness. The main concern is to try to advocate the cognitivist claim about the artistic value of artworks’ contribution to the advance of knowledge, as well as for the relevance of the moral dimension for artistic value. This is a discussion of the intersection of the debate about moral and aesthetic value. The central part of the paper is focused on a debate with Peter Lamarque. The problem of immoral art-works and their cognitive value is discussed at the end of this paper in order to show that they are counterexamples of the thesis of artistic relevance of the moral dimension.
