Abstract:

According to the testimony of Theon of Smyrna, the Greek commentator of Plato, there was a serious disagreement between Plato and the peripathetics – such as Adrastus - on the status of the movement of planets, particularly on the ‘stations’ and ‘retrogradation’ of the so-called wandering stars. Were these real phaenomena, or were these movements, as they seem to us, the appearance of a uniform and regular but far more complex movement? In the 2nd c. BC, the stakes of the debate were far from being limited to the scientific domain. This paper presents some attempts to explain the various representations of the wanderings of the stars, trying to clarify their philosophical-religious context.
