Abstract
The present contribution is a survey of the research concernig the coin finds from the site of Aquileia over the last 50 years. The 70s and the 80s of the 20th century saw, the introduction of a scientific approach to the study of the numismatic collection housed in the local National Museum. This led to a first analysis of the monetary circulation during the Roman age, even though the systematic edition of the coin finds coming from the ancient site remained unaccomplished. The last 20 years represent a turning point. From one hand, thanks to a new season of archaeological excavations, a new amount of coin finds can be analyzed according to the stratigraphical contexts of provenance. On the other hand, the work of recording and edition of the massive numismatic collection has been resumed as well as the study of the monetary circulation of one of the most prominent cities of the former Roman Empire.
