Gladiatorium paria con didascalie su instrumentum: alcune considerazioni in margine a un elemento di cerniera bronzea rinvenuta a Bologna

Abstract
Lo studio di un elemento di cerniera di bronzo con le raffigurazioni di tre coppie di gladiatori, accompagnate dai loro nomi, offre l'occasione di prendere in esame i numerosi casi d'instrumentum inscriptum con raffigurazioni dei gladiatori accompagnate da didascalie. L'analisi ha permesso di individuare che la frequente presenza di queste didascalie è legata da un lato alla necessità rendere identificabile un personaggio famoso, che invece l'armatura, nella sua standardizzazione, rendeva anonimo e, dall'altro, all'intenzione di personalizzare un prodotto per attrarre un maggior numero di compratori. Si trattava, dunque, di prodotti indirizzati agli appassionati, che desideravano oggetti che riportassero i nomi dei loro atleti preferiti e che potessero essere orgogliosamente esibiti ad amici e ospiti. Si è notato, infine, che col tempo la continua riproduzione delle didascalie coi nomi di gladiatori famosi, ha portato spesso alla loro deformazione, rendendoli talora non riconoscibili: la didascalia ha perso così la sua funzione esplicativa per tramutarsi in un puro elemento esornativo.
The study of a bronze hinge with the images of three pairs of gladiators, identified by their names, gives the opportunity to exarnine many cases of instrumentum inscriptum where the representations of the gladiators are combined with captions. The analysis has identified that the frequent occurrence of these captions is linked on the one hand the need possible to identify a famous gladiator, that instead the armor, in its standardization, made anonymous and secondly the intention to custornize a product to attract more buyers, It was, therefore, of products targeted to fans who wanted objects that reported the names of their favorite athletes and that could be proudly exhibited to friends and guests. It is noted, finally, that with time the continuous reproduction of the captions, led to deformation of some of these, sometimes making them almost unrecognizable: the caption thus lost its explanatory function to turn into a simple ornamental element.
