Abstract
Alcune note sono dedicate alle rappresentazioni di vivai ittici nel repertorio artistico romano. Tale soggetto, che fonda le sue origini nella tradizione del naturalismo ellenistico, è molto attestato nella produzione pittorico-musiva del mondo romano ed è contraddistinto dal modo in cui è raffigurata la fauna marina, sempre viva e in movimento, su di un fondale azzurro che imita l'acqua. La fortuna di queste rappresentazioni ben si spiega pensando all'apprezzamento dei prodotti ittici nell'alimentazione romana, come risulta dalle numerose menzioni nelle fonti latine e dalle leggi suntuarie promulgate per limitarne l'uso.
Some notes are dedicated to representations of fish vivaria in the Roman artistic repertoire. This subject has its origins in the tradition of Hellenistic naturalism and is frequent in the pictorial and mosaic production of the Roman world. It is characterized for the manner in which "marine life" is depicted, always alive, on a blue bottom that imitates water. The success of these representations is well explained considering the appreciation of fìsh products in Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous mentions in Latin sources and sumptuary laws enacted to limit their use.
