L'epigrafia augustea nella Transpadania: le ragioni di un'assenza

Abstract
L'epigrafia imperiale augustea fu analizzata acutamente da Geza Alföldi come fenomeno di grande novità e di numerosa presenza a Roma e altrove. Tuttavia essa trova confronti scarsi e modesti nella Xl Regio, nonostante che la Transpadana abbia avuto una vivace e originale produzione epigrafica. Probabilmente ciò è dovuto a due fattori. Da un lato, in questa area l'epigrafia latina è un fenomeno ancora alle prime armi, preceduto da altre esperienze locali di scarsa sopravvivenza: l'espressività e la comunicazione esposta in pubblico dovevano esere gradualmente "inventate". Dall'altro, anche il loro soggetto, l'Augusto, era una figura tutta nuova nei suoi poteri da affermare e nei suoi rapporti autorevoli e autoritari ma anche sentimentali con la popolazione. L'estrema scarsità di testimonianze epigrafiche è dovuta certamente ad una grande scomparsa di esse nel corso dei secoli, ma anche alla rarità dei luoghi e delle occasioni in cui Augusto volle manifestarsi con questo mezzo di comunicazione, che egli seppe utilizzare al meglio nei luoghi di massimo risultato pubblicitario.
The imperial epigraphy of Augustus era was acutely analyzed by Geza Alföldi as a new phenomenon of great novelty and great diffusion in Rome and elsewhere. Nevertheless it finds few and humble documents in the Xl Regio, although the Transpadana had a lively and originai production of inscriptions. Probably there are two reasons for this situation. First, in this area Roman epigraphy was stili at its initial stages, preceded by other locai experiences scarcely survived: the expressiveness and the public communication had stili to be gradually invented. Second, its topic, Augustus, was a figure completely new, his power had to be confirmed, as well as his authoritative, authoritarian and affectional relationship with the people. The lack of epigraphic examples is due to the disappearence of these over the centuries, but also to the rarity of places and occasions in which Augustus would manifest himself through this means of communication, that he used a lot better where they could assure the more efficacious advertising results.
